Marble, Limestone & Travertine

How to Care for Your Natural Stone Countertops and Tile

If you’ve been wondering how to properly care for your stone or tile, we’re here to help. We’re the experts on all things stone and we’ve put together an easy-to-follow list to keep your stone looking perfect for years to come.

This list is all about marble, limestone and travertine. These stones are softer and naturally porous, which means they readily absorb liquids, oils and other substances. Maintenance is essential to prevent staining, dull spots and bacterial growth.

Do

  • For daily cleaning, use StoneTech Stone & Tile Cleaner with a soft towel or paper towel. The cleaner is available here in our showroom.

  • Rinse the surface with a separate, clean, damp cloth to remove any residue, then dry with a soft towel to prevent water spots or streaks.

  • Blot spills immediately to prevent staining, especially on lighter-colored marble countertops.

  • Protect surfaces with non-slip mats or area rugs. Use coasters, trivets and placemats. We recommend using a cutting board as well.

  • Dust and mop the flooring frequently to prevent dirt from dulling your custom countertops or surrounding tile.

  • These materials require annual sealing with StoneTech Bulletproof Sealer, also available in our showroom.

Don’t

  • Use vinegar, lemon juice or other cleaners containing acids.

  • Use bathroom, grout or tub and tile cleaners.

  • Use abrasive cleaners or tools such as powders or scrubbing brushes.

  • Handle tomatoes, wine, lemons, Kool-Aid, bleach, coffee, mustard, soda and similar items carelessly on busy surfaces like your kitchen countertops, as these areas are more prone to staining.

  • Put hot cookware directly on surfaces.

  • Expose the stone to sudden temperature changes, especially near the edges, as this can cause damage.

Please note that honed, textured or brushed finishes require more cleaning than polished finishes. Metal marks, fingerprints and other signs of daily life are more prevalent on honed finishes. Most of these marks can be easily removed by using the cleaning procedures listed above.

Any stone material can potentially be damaged by sudden or rapid temperature changes, especially near the edges. Use of hot pads and trivets is always recommended. We do not advise putting hot cookware directly on custom countertops other than porcelain.

Regular care keeps your stone looking beautiful and performing well for years. If you ever need product recommendations, care guidance or help with future countertop installation projects, our team is always here to help.
