How to Care for Your Porcelain Countertops & Tile

Porcelain is a resilient and durable man-made material that is easy to clean and maintain. It’s nonporous, making it resistant to absorbing water or other liquids. This makes porcelain a great choice for areas that are frequently exposed to moisture, such as bathroom countertops. Porcelain is also a hygienic option for kitchen countertops in homes, offices or commercial spaces.

Porcelain can have a decades-long lifespan with the proper maintenance. As experts in stone, we’ve put together a list that breaks down the dos and don’ts when it comes to caring for your porcelain countertops or custom tile.

Do

  • Clean freshly installed porcelain with gentle soap, water and a soft microfiber cloth or sponge.

  • Use a soft cloth or a paper towel to wipe down surfaces.

  • Always dry the surface after washing to prevent patina buildup.

  • You can place hot cookware on porcelain countertops, but we recommend using a hot pad when appliances produce heat for extended periods of time.

Don’t

  • Let spills sit for long periods of time, as this can lead to staining.

  • Use harsh chemicals or strong detergents even though porcelain is nonporous.

  • Use a polishing machine on a porcelain countertop.

  • Use cream colored cleaning products.

  • Seal porcelain countertops.

Please note that honed, textured or brushed finishes require more frequent cleaning than polished finishes. Metal marks, fingerprints and other signs of daily life are more prevalent on honed finishes. Most of these marks can be easily removed by using the cleaning procedures listed above.

Porcelain surfaces are designed to last, and proper care helps them look their best over time. If you ever need product recommendations or care advice, our team is always happy to help.
